Parkgate-based runner Ray Matthews' new book

Parkgate-based runner Ray Matthews' new book

A NEW book charting a 70-year old runner’s mental and physical journey through life, as he sets himself almost impossible challenges, is out this month.

Me and My Shadow is the story of Ray Matthews, a local man described by publishers Pneuma Springs as “truly exceptional”.

Ray’s life is inspiring and exhilarating, they say, and “anyone seeking to take on the impossible should read this book”.

The former boxer-turned runner explains the motivation and fervour for life that led him to conquer the Sahara Desert and a 100 mile round-Rotherham run at 70!

The book will be on top booksellers’ shelves on February 23, and on February 28 Ray will stage a book signing session at Energie Gym, Parkgate, between 9am to 1pm, and 4pm to 7pm. A further book signing at a Waterstones, Sheffield, store will take place next month.

But no rest for Ray! He has set his next challenge for June 9 this year, when he will attempt the 100 kilometres London to Brighton run in aid of the St Dunstan’s Charity for Blind Servicemen. Prior to that, there will be an ‘Evening with Ray’ fundraiser event to include a three-course meal at Zafran restaurant, Maltby, on March 5. Tickets priced £10 are available now from Parkgate’s energie gym, where Ray is based.
