A NEW book charting a septuagenarian runner’s mental and physical journey through life, as he sets himself almost impossible challenges, is out this month.
Me and My Shadow is the story of Ray Matthews, a local man described by publishers Pneuma Springs as “truly exceptional”.
Ray’s life is inspiring and exhilarating, they say, and “anyone seeking to take on the impossible should read this book”.
The former boxer-turned runner explains the motivation and fervour for life that led him to conquer the blistering Sahara Desert and then a 100 mile round-Rotherham run at the age of 70!
His book will feature on top booksellers’ shelves from February 23, and on February 28 Ray will stage a book signing session at Energie Gym, Parkgate, between 9am to 1pm, and 4pm to 7pm. A further book signing is planned for Meadowhall and at another Sheffield Waterstone store next month.
But no rest for Ray! He has set yet another challenge for June 9 this year, when he will attempt the 100 kilometres London to Brighton run in aid of the St Dunstan’s Charity for Blind Servicemen. He may even be accompanied by a St Dunstan’s serviceman.
Prior to that, there will be an ‘Evening with Ray’ fundraiser event to include a three-course meal at Zafran restaurant, Maltby, on March 5.
Tickets priced £10 each are available now from Parkgate’s Energie gym, where Ray is based, tel. 01709 719900.
