Renovation work on Doncaster market will begin in the spring of 2015 – though some traders fear it may never happen.

Doncaster Council had considered starting the million pound-plus project in the autumn of 2014, but the plan was abandoned so traders could benefit from Christmas sales.

The authority has around £1.4m to spend on its markets with the town centre set to account for the bulk of it.

Although the new changes have yet to be decided – the council is considering a raft of options, including new stalls for the outdoor market.

But Mick Maye, chairman of the Market Traders Federation, is cynical about the prospects for improvement.

He said: “Over the years there have been a lot of plans that were supposed to happen.

“The markets are in decline – if the council wants regeneration they should freeze rent increases.”
