Police target poor parking at school

POLICE have taken action to crackdown on drivers parking illegally outside a Mexborough school just weeks after warning parents about the problem.

Officers conducted an operation outside St John’s C of E Primary School in Sedgefield Road, to target motorists parking at the main entrance, which makes it difficult for pupils to see oncoming traffic when crossing.

They issued fixed penalty notices to two people who had parked illegally last Thursday, landing them each with a £30 ticket.

The operation was led by officers from the Doncaster West Safer Neighbourhood Team following a visit to the school just before Christmas to warn parents about the issue.

Inspector Ray Mountford told residents at a police meeting in Mexborough Resource Centre last Thursday: “The issue of parking outside that school is the worst in the town.

“In phase one of the operation we advised parents about their parking, and in phase two we enforced that parking illegally causes problems.

“We will keep an eye on the situation and officers may have to go back if we get information that it is continuing.”

Headteacher Carol Barnes was not available for comment this week.

The crackdown comes a month after Don Valley MP Caroline Flint launched a campaign to stamp out nuisance parking outside the school gates.

The campaign also aims to introduce a 20mph speed limit on roads around schools.

Mexborough councillors Sue Phillips, David Holland and Tracey Leyland-Jepson are due to meet later this month to discuss how to push forward proposals for the reduced limit on certain roads in the town.

Coun Phillips said: “There is a big problem with speeding in Mexborough. At our next members meeting we will be discussing the possibility of having a 20mph limit on all build up roads in the town and in particular near schools.”

Part of the Highwoods estate was designated a 20mph zone after seven-year-old schoolboy Kyle McDermott was killed in a hit a run on Maple Road in 2006.

Coun Phillips said: “The last thing we want is another tragedy.

“The limit will not apply to main roads but if lowering the limit on all estate roads is what it takes to improve safety then so be it.”
