A MAN jumped from a moving car in a bid to escape police after a high speed chase around Thorne.

Police were forced into car chases on two consecutive nights, resulting in Ben Bailey, 23 of Northgate, Moorends, being charged with burglary.

Officers first spotted two Ford Focus’ and a Citroen C2 car speeding along Coulman Road in convoy in the early hours of Sunday, March 4, but when they were signalled to pull over, the trio of vehicles broke off in different directions and sped away.

Police then chased one of the Fords for a short distance into Thorne before it crashed into a field.

The driver managed to escape, but the passenger was arrested in connection with a burglary in Foxhill Road, Thorne, where the car they were in had been reported stolen from earlier that evening.

The following night at 1.30am officers were involved in a second chase with a Vauxhall Astra as it left Thorne and headed to Moorends along Micklethwaite Grove where the passenger leapt from the moving car to escape. The driver crashed into a parked car and fled.

The police gave chase after recognising one of the men as the driver of the Ford Focus the previous night. They later arrested two men at a house in Northgate.

Ashley Edeson, 23, from Leeds, and Daniel Roffey, 20, of Bradford have also been charged with burglary.

The three were remanded after appearing at Doncaster Crown Court.

PC Andy Hotchkiss said: “We will not tolerate criminal activity and anti-social behaviour in Doncaster and I would urge the public to always report a crime to the police.”
