Visitors to one of Doncaster’s most scenic beauty spots can expect to see cuddly critters and monsters by using a new mobile phone app that is taking the country by storm.
Pokémon Go players are being urged to enjoy the great outdoors whilst playing the smash hit game as the app can be used at the Potteric Carr Nature Reserve.
Gamers are encouraged to take in the beautiful surroundings of the wetland wildlife haven and share their Pokemon findings online by tweeting @yorkswildlife with their pictures using the hashtag @PokemonWild.
Doncaster youngster Jason Peacock recently visited the nature reserve and had great success catching some Pokémon.
His mum Melanie said: “It’s a great place as Potteric is safe to walk around - there are no roads and there are really nice views whilst playing Pokémon Go.”
Nicola Scothern, regional manager of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, which maintains Potteric Carr, added: “We have been having lots of fun on our Potteric Carr reserve finding Pokémon and have seen several people on site enjoying the game too.
“We love the idea of more people being outdoors as a result of the game and encourage everyone to keep an eye out for some real local wildlife too.
“Why not get outdoors and visit Potteric Carr or one of our other nature reserves and let us know if you find some interesting wildlife, whether real or virtual.”
The game, which lets players roam a map using their phone’s GPS location to find and catch Pokemon characters to train and battle, has already become a huge hit in the USA, Australia and Germany and now Doncaster players are getting in on the action.
A Facebook page, Pokemon Go Doncaster, has become a huge hit and allows players to swap tips, share photos and discuss sightings and already has more than 500 members, despite only being set up a couple of weeks ago. The main aim of the mobile phone game is to catch Pokemon - pocket monsters - which pop up along the way. The game provides an augmented reality experience, using the smartphone’s camera to provide a live view of the world, with Pokemon superimposed.
Any creatures caught can be used in battle against other players.
