A MULTI-million pound complex providing 60 new apartments for elderly people is being opened officially in a South Yorkshire village.

Cherry Tree Court Extra Care Scheme is being launched at Goldthorpe on Thursday, July 28, with a public open day from 11.30am until 3.30pm.

The event is being attended by Barnsley poet Ian Macmillan, and there will be performances by youngsters from Gillian Banks Theatre School, The Chequers Band, plus a quiz, raffle, bingo and buffet lunch.

Ian Macmillan will be delivering a special treat - a poem to the new residents, specifically written for them.

Other guests at the event will be Coun Dorothy Higginbottom and Wentworth and Dearne MP John Healey.

A spokeswoman for Chevin Housing, which runs the complex, said: “All the apartments have now been allocated with residents having moved in.”
