Moving-in time at £17m school site

DEMOLITION work is set to start on the crumbling former Outwood Academy Adwick buildings, after builders put the final touches the £16 million new school.

Officials at the academy have confirmed pupils will start to move into the newly constructed site immediately after half term.

Bulldozers will then move onto the site, at Windmill Balk Lane, Woodlands, to start removing the former buildings which will be replaced by playing fields when they have been removed.

They are expected to be removed completely by the end of May.

Chairman of the governors at the school, John Mounsey, is delighted the move is finally close to completion, having complaining in the past about the condition of the previous buildings, which at one point had to be surrounded by scaffolding for safety reasons.

Mr Mounsey said: “The building looks absolutely marvellous, although I have not been able to see inside it yet.

“The building is now finished, and the teaching conference centre is nearly complete.

“The school had been a split site before now, which meant students had to run from once place to another between lessons. Now they will be on the same site.

“I’m just over the moon that at last we’ve got a brand new school on the site. There were trials and tribulations to get to this point, but now we are finally set to get a much needed facility which will benefit both the students and the wider community.”

As well as the main building itself, the school will also have a sports hall and floodlit sports pitches which will be available for the public to use in the evenings.

The new school plan provoked controversy among some who wanted to preserve the former Percy Jackson Grammar School buildings, which are being demolished.

Staff will move into the new building on February 25. All pupils will be in the school by February 28.
