MORE donations have been secured for the roof appeal at Misterton’s All Saints Church.
The church was hit with a £33,000 repair bill after lead thieves targeted the church eight times in as many years - making closure a real possibility - but a ‘fighting fund’ now stands at £18,510.
Many community events have been organised to help raise funds for the appeal and the latest, a Christmas shopping night at The Dovecote Cafe, has boosted the coffers by another £750.
Councillor Hazel Brand handed over a £250 cheque from her discretional grant fund and last weekend’s
Misterton Christmas Lights switch on raised just under £300.
The village Co-op store also contributed to the appeal when it held its recent charity day complete with homemade produce sales, raffle, tombola and a ‘guess the weight of the Christmas cake’ competition.
This raised £480 which was split between the Co-op’s charity Help for Heroes and the roof appeal.
Church volunteer Jane Moffett said: “A concerted effort is now being made to achieve £20,000 before Christmas.”
A Christmas Fair will be held on Saturday at All Saints’ Church and this will feature a model railway display, homemade cakes and cards plus festive face painting by the Ladybirds Playgroup.
Father Christmas will be present at the event which runs from 10am to noon and there will be appeal mugs, children’s painting competition and quiz sheets at the official roof appeal stall.
