DONCASTER Minster has been awarded £291,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help carry out vital repairs.

St George’s Minster was one of 16 churches across Yorkshire granted a share of the £2 million Repair Grants for Places of Worship scheme, which is funded by the lottery and handed out through English Heritage.

The money will be spent on roof repairs, new gutters, repairing stonework and work on the windows.

Doncaster Central MP Rosie Winterton, a patron of the Minster Restoration Fund, said she was “delighted” about the funding.

She said: “St George’s Minster is one of Doncaster’s most breath-taking landmarks.

“Our generation has a duty to preserve it for future generations. Parts of the building are badly in need of repair and there is no way this work could be done without a grant of this size.”
