COLLEGE bosses and community leaders have joined forces in a bid to reduce unemployment levels in Mexborough the surrounding area.

A collaboration has been set up between Mexborough Resource Centre and Dearne Valley College to showcase what services are available to jobseekers,

The move comes as it was revealed there has been an increase in unemployment levels in the Dearne, unlike the national trend which has seen a reduction in the jobless figure.

Latest unemployment figures show that the number of people claiming jobseekers’ allowance in the Doncaster North constituency, which covers Mexborough, was 3,589 up from 3,39.

In the same period - December to January - unemployment in Don Valley, which covers Conisbrough and Denaby, rose from 2,625 to 2,797.

An open day is now being held at Mexborough Resource Centre in Dolcliffe Road, tomorrow to help people back on the jobs ladder.

A spokesman for Dearne Valley College said: “The event will officially launch the partnership, which has been developed to assist the Mexborough Resource Centre in offering quality provision to local people, and to help tackle unemployment and accessing online service, and much more.

“The event will be used to provide advice on the available services and courses at the centre, with refreshments available throughout the day.”

The resource centre is run by Mexborough Community Partnership, which aims to provide help to those looking for a job.

The college’s skills for work team will be present at the centre one day per week to assist residents.

The open day takes place between 9.30am and 4pm. Information on courses including English, maths, beauty and childcare will be available.
