Guitar hero Graham Oliver is putting down his plectrum and sharing his knowledge of the pottery wheel as part of a heritage walk around his hometown of Mexborough.
The founder member of eighties rock heroes Saxon has a keen interest in pottery and has donated a large box of shards to Right Up Our Street’s ‘Unpacking a Potted History’ project.
His collection will be cleaned up and photographed to be used in craft workshops on the MEXPAC van (Mexborough’s Potter Art Car).
Mr Oliver will also he leading a Pottery Walk around the town on a date to be confirmed.
He said: “I have a real fascination with and admiration for Mexborough’s industrial heritage and in the 19th century the pottery industry in the area was huge.
“Sadly though it’s quite often difficult to identify Mexborough ware, because a lot of it wasn’t marked.”
The MEXPAC van will be making its latest stop at Mexborough Youth Centre on Tuesday, April 29, from 6pm to 8pm.
The project is run by the Doncaster Community Arts team, which secured £2.5 million funding to host arts projects across the borough over the next three years.
