A BUSINESSWOMAN and self-confessed ‘couch potato’ is gearing up to complete a mammoth trek across desert and mountains in the Middle East.

Maureen Shah, 53, decided to take on the epic journey across Jordan after changing her lifestyle which saw her balloon to a size 20.

Two years on, the director of Doncaster’s property-based Vigo Group is now a slim size 12 after joining a Slimming World class in Auckley and working with personal trainer Michael Dwyer of Re-Sculpt in Doncaster.

Despite having a fear of heights Maureen, of Gatewood Lane in Cantley, is determined to complete April’s Jordan Desert Trek across mountains to raise £5,000 for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

The former Epworth resident recently completed a 25-mile Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in preparation and is walking at least ten miles.

She said: “As I am terrified of heights, I thought that the Jordan desert would be okay, little did I know that this involves trekking through a mountainous area!

“So, now I am trying to overcome my fear which is proving to be harder than it sounds.

“I am working hard to overcome this fear by doing a lot more hill walking and as for my thoughts of the trip they go from being elated and can’t wait to get there to absolute terror. But mostly, I am really looking forward to the trek and keeping myself busy preparing for it.”
