ANGRY Mexborough market traders have slammed the Prime Minister and the Government’s High Street retail guru over their pleas for help as they face huge rent increases.
Stallholders wrote to David Cameron and Mary “Queen of Shops” Portas - who is carrying out a Government-backed review on declining shopping trends - seeking their support against an impending 500 per cent rent hike imposed by Doncaster Council.
Letters were sent in May, but indoor market traders claim neither has given a reply.
Traders’ spokesman Gordon Smith said: “It is very dissapointing. We expected a response, especially from the Prime Minister’s office.”
Another trader, Wendy Bailey, added: “This is another case of politicians thinking we will go away if they ignore us.”
The Times’ had not received a response from the offices’ of Mr Cameron or Mary Portas at the time of going to press.
* Doncaster Council is offering charities free stalls on the outdoor market on the first Wednesday of each month until November. Contact the markets office for more information.
