A man has died following a road smash in South Kirkby yesterday (Wednesday).

The 26-year-old man from South Yorkshire was driving down Hemsworth Road in the direction of Hemsworth when his Peugeot 206 was in collision with a Kia Carens travelling in the opposite direction.

An off-duty nurse and doctor did their best to save him but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Kia had to be cut free from his vehicle by firefighters from South Elmsall and Hemsworth fire stations. He was taken to Pinderfields Hospital suffering neck, scalp and spinal injuries, but his condition is not thought to be life threatening.

The collision took place at around 4.40pm after which Hemsworth Road was closed for several hours. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance attended the incident.

Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information should contact the major collision enquiry team on 101.
