A COLLEGE student has brushed up her skills to win a prestigious award.

Lucy Broadbent, 23, won the Northern Heat of the Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year competition 2012.

Lucy, of Sprotbrough, is studying a level one diploma in painting and decorating at Doncaster College and will now represent the site in the final of this year’s competition.

The heat was held at the Doncaster which saw 15 people compete against each other from various colleges in the northern region.

Competitors had to demonstrate a range of painting and decorating skills.

The winner said: “It was difficult but I’m looking forward to the final. My tutor, Mark Adams, taught me everything I know, he’s brilliant.”

Mark Adams, a painting and decorating tutor, said: “I am very proud of Lucy and what she has achieved and wish her every success in the finals competition.

“I first met Lucy whilst she was working towards a preparation for employment course at Bentley Training Centre where she demonstrated excellent potential to progress within the painting and decorating industry. I encouraged her to further develop her skills by enrolling on a level one diploma in painting and decorating at Doncaster College.”

Since starting the course in September 2011, Lucy has been involved in many painting projects and most recently helped to redecorated the Stainforth FE centre for its relaunch as Doncaster College East.

Lucy is hoping to do the painting and decorating level two diploma.

The finals will be held in November 2012 at Ricoh Arena in Coventry.
