Young authors launch their latest graphic novel

A SCHOOL team of authors has visited borough libraries to promote its new novel.

The Dearne High delegates were joined by teenage fiction author Bali Rae, as they launched their graphic novel, Fool's Gold, to the general

public.

A raft of pupils played a part in putting the novel together; earlier this year a 53-strong party from four Dearne primary schools joined older pupils to 'act out' a chapter at the Yorkshire Mining Museum. And previous to that, a sortie was made to the Yorkshire coast, taking in Whitby and Scarborough.

Fool's Gold charts the adventures of pupils who take character parts, and enters new writing territory with its "stories within stories", linked together with input from a host of famous names.

Its first 500 words are penned by Shadowmancer author GP Taylor, followed on by such as Chris Wooding, Darren Shan, and Anthony Horowitz to name but a few. Local poet Ian McMillan is, of course, in the line-up.

Dearne High's director of specialism Peter Shaw said the ambitious project had been fun for all involved, and had drawn out real commitment from the kids.

Dearne High is not new to the publishing world... pupils have already produced one book, Out of the Shadows, which is an anthology of fantasy stories and was published in 2007.

Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesman for Barnsley's customer and neighbourhood services, said: "Barnsley Libraries were pleased to host this event with Dearne High School.

The pupils are proof that one is never too young to begin on a writing career!"

The book is available via the Internet, from Amazon, or can be bought at a reduced price of 5 from the Goldthorpe school.
