WI ladies celebrate Jubilee in own style
THE ladies of Wath Women’s Institute (WI) celebrated the Diamond Jubilee in a spectacular fashion - by yarn-bombingthe town centre.
Group members had been furiously knitting, crocheting and sewing to create eye-catching displays of crafts, adorning railings, benches and even lamposts.
The idea of covering ugly fences and street furniture with handcrafted textile pieces known as Yarnbombing is becoming more and more popular within the craft community.
Wath WI have named their craft installation The People’s Gallery and are encouraging others to add to it.
Group member Donna Tuxford said: “The town centre looked fantastic and all the shopkeepers were saying how much it had improved the area.
“We want to support our local shops and hopefully this will help to bring more shoppers into Wath.
“There is red white and blue bunting up, along with love hearts and other designs.
“Yarnbombing is very popular in the craft making community and it has been described as urban graffiti for pensioners.
“We want this to be a permanent thing and hopefully we will be able to keep adding to it.”
