Linda McAvan, local Member of European Parliament and the leading MEP on Europes new draft tobacco laws, is calling on the government to reconsider its plain packaging u-turn.

Wath Euro MP Linda McAvan has welcomed the government’s announcement that they are moving towards implementing plain packaging for cigarettes.

Public health minister Jane Ellison said draft regulations would be introduced “swiftly” after evidence showed unbranded packs could cut the number of children starting to smoke.

Ms McAvan said nearly 14, 000 children smoke in Yorkshire and the Humber, adding the move “will help to make smoking less attractive to the next generation.“
