CCTV footage filmed in Leeds on Monday night clearly captures the sound of two RAF Typhoons smashing the sound barrier as they raced to intercept a civilian airliner that had lost radio contact on its descent into Newcastle Airport.

People from across Doncaster and as far afield as York and Leeds reported hearing the massive 'explosions' shortly after 9.45pm on Monday after the two fighter jets were scrambled from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.

User John Michael, who posted the footage filmed outside his home, said: "Listen to two loud sonic boom explosions from RAF Typhoon jets over LS17.

"They shook all our doors and windows! Warning - turn your speaker volume down as these explosions are loud!"

The clip features audio of the first sonic boom a few seconds into the footage - with the second following just over 30 seconds later.

He added: "The noise woke up all the birds and it completely freaked them all out too!"

The Ministry of Defence later confirmed the noises were caused as the jets flew at 767mph to escort the Air France flight from Paris to Newcastle into land.
