VETERAN Mexborough trader Gordon Smith closed his shutters for the final time at the weekend after more than 50 years on the town market.

Instantly recognisable in his Union Jack top hat, Gordon has been a constant figure at his toy stall in the indoor market for decades, bringing joy to generations of youngsters.

He retired after his final day on Saturday, taking with him a wealth of great memories.

Gordon, who lives in Maltby, said: “I have really enjoyed my time on the market and I will always have great memories.

“It is a really friendly market and I will miss my loyal customers and of course fellow traders.”

His association with the market goes back to the 1950s when he used to help out at his auntie and uncle’s stall while still a schoolboy.

He eventually took over the business and moved into the stall he occupied until the weekend in 1977.

Mr Smith said he is looking forward to an active retirement and will still promote Mexborough as a market town.
