Variety performance for charity
A GROUP of big hearted youngsters have raised hundreds of pounds for a military charity in the name of a fallen Barnsley soldier.
Members of the Kidz Du Care group staged a variety show at the Dearne Playhouse in Goldthorpe on Friday, June 15, and raised £850 for Help For Heroes.
They chose to support the charity after Private Matthew Thornton, 28, lost his life when he was caught up in an explosion in Afghanistan in November 2011.
The show in his honour saw more than 40 young people, aged four to 17, take to the stage to sing, dance and perform.
Project co-ordinator Jill Arkley-Jevons said: “It was a wonderful show. We had 32 difference scenes incorporating different styles of dance, comedy and singing.
“There were tap dancers, street dance and even a Lady Gaga tribute act.
“They did really well to raise that much money and it was another example of the good work these kids are doing.”
The family of Pte Thornton were presented with the Elizabeth Cross in May. The medal is presented to relatives of servicemen and women killed in action or through terrorism, in national recognition of their loss and sacrifice.
