Two men face court over double death road crash
TWO men charged with causing the death of a Rawmarsh couple, in a road crash near Scarborough, have appeared in court.
Robert Oughton, 52, and John Lote, 60, were brought before Judge Paul Hoffman at Leeds Crown Court, last Monday.
They face charges of manslaughter, following the fatal crash at the foot of Staxton Hill on September 21 last year, which claimed the lives of Paul and Deborah Clements, of Bear Tree Road, Rawmarsh, and orphaned their 16-year old son, Cameron.
The crash involved a collision between a coach full of youngsters from a marching band, that had been travelling down the B1249, Staxton Hill, and the Clements' grey VW Passat which was on its way to Scarborough along the A66.
Oughton, 52, who was the driver of the Daf Bova coach, also faces a charge of death by dangerous driving.
Pleas are still to be entered by Oughton and Lote. Both men are from Burntwood, in Staffordshire.
The case was subsequently adjourned until May 29 for pleas and a case management hearing.
The sudden loss of popular Rawmarsh couple Paul, 40, and Deborah, 39, who both died at the scene of the crash, devastated their family and friends, and stunned the community.
A trust fund has now been set up for their only son, Cameron, who had taken his GCSE exams just weeks before the tragic accident
happened.
Bramall Construction, where Deborah had worked for three years, contributed to the trust fund set up by Deborah's brother and sister, to enable Cameron to complete his education successfully.
Parent company Keepmoat have matched the donation.
Bramall's finance director Steve Welburn, based at Wath, said Deborah was known as "a lovely woman", who joined Bramall's Doncaster outlet as an office manager, and was in the process of taking up a promotion to Best Practice auditor and co-ordinator, when she died.
Staff at the company have compiled a "memory book" of the couple.
Managing director Neil Baxter, said: "We have all been shocked and devastated since hearing of the news of Debbie and Paul's death.
"Debbie was a much loved and popular colleague and our thoughts and prayers are with Debbie and Paul's family and friends at this awful time."
