DONCASTER’S last surviving MP from the miners’ strike era has died, aged 85.

Tributes have been paid to Mick Welsh, who was also the last of the borough’s parliamentarians to head for Westminster after starting his working life as a miner.

Mr Welsh was elected as MP for Don Valley in 1979, but because of a boundary change in 1983, he went on to represent Doncaster North from 1983 until his retirement from politics in 1992.

Before his move into Westminster politics he had worked at both Bullcroft and Brodsworth Collieries.

His funeral is on Wednesday at Rosehill Crematorium.

Doncaster Coun John Mounsey, who knew him from his time at Brodsworth Colliery said: “I always found him to be a very open and honest man and what he said he could deliver, he delivered.”

Former Bullcroft Colliery colleague Coun Ted Kitchen, added: “I was with him when he was union secretary and when he was a face worker. He was a gentleman who would go out of his way to help.”

Ed Miliband, Doncaster North MP and Labour leader said: “He felt it a privilege to serve the people.”
