TRAGEDY AT THE TRIATHLON
Times EXCLUSIVE A FORMER air ace turned charity champion has died – while raising cash for his favourite good cause in his THIRD successive triathlon.
Organisers of the London Triathlon were rocked when 'superfit' grandad Ian Sloss collapsed in the water of the capital's docks, on the swimming leg – the opening event of the gruelling three-discipline event.
The retired Air Commodore from Wath, raised his hand momentarily, before slipping beneath the water.
Though a kayak immediately raced to his rescue and medics kept him alive at the scene, he died two days later in hospital.
Stunned friends described the 64-year-old as "a true gentleman, both in and out of uniform".
He was raising cash for the forces families association, SSAFA, when tragedy befell him.
