Torchbearer visits local school

PUPILS at a school for children with autism were overjoyed when Olympic torchbearer Ben Bowns visited to show off the flame he carried as part of the relay.
Ben, 21, from Mexborough, was chosen to carry the torch through Warmsworth last week in recognition of his ice hockey career which has seen him represent Great Britain at this year’s World Championships.
He dropped in to the National Autistic Society’s Robert Ogden School in Thurnscoe on Thursday, June 28, to show students a replica of the torch he carried.
Ben did a question and answer session during assembly before posing for pictures with children and staff.
He talked about the torch relay and about his ice hockey career, during which he has won five national championships, and represented England at youth level.
Ben said he was honoured to have been asked to attend the school.
“I’m honoured that I was asked to come into school and share my experience.
“I’m pleased I got the chance to show off the torch but also talk about my ice hockey with the pupils – it was fun.”
At the last Under 20 World Championships he was awarded Netminder of the Tournament and named Most Valuable Player for Team GB.
Head teacher Khursh Khan said: “It was a fantastic day for the school and the students were very excited to meet Ben.
“They also got the chance to hold the torch.”
