Thurnscoe man named as murder investigation continues

A THURNSCOE man who died as a result of stab wounds has been named by police.

Philip Alan Smith, 36, of Stotford Drive, was found injured in Church Street at about 4.30pm on Saturday, January 28, after a disturbance near the junction with Houghton Road.

He was taken to Barnsley District General Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

A post mortem, conducted at the Medico Legal Centre in Sheffield on Sunday, where it was established that he died as a result of being stabbed.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Three other men arrested on suspicion of violent disorder have been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Specialist officers are now liasing closely with Philip’s family.

Detective Superintendent Andy Thompson, the senior investigating officer, said: “Extensive house-to-house and forensic enquiries have been taking place to establish the facts in this case.

“I still wish to hear from anyone who has any information or who witnessed the disturbance in Thurnscoe on Saturday afternoon.”
