Thumbs-up for salon and cafe

OBJECTORS have failed in their bid to stop the opening of a new beauty salon, cafe and offices, that is set to bring new jobs to Mexborough town centre.

Current traders on the town’s High Street raised a 236 name petition against the new development within a derelict terrace in Hope Street.

They claimed that another seven beauty businesses and six cafes in close proximity to Hope Street, would be placed in jeopardy by further competition.

Doncaster Council’s planning committee gave the development next to Mexborough Library the green light last week, despite planning policy that states cafes and beauty salons should be ‘in the minority’ in a town centre, as an oversupply can have a ‘negative impact’.

Vice-chair of Doncaster’s planning committee, Eddie Dobbs, said: “The decision to pass this application was unanimous, and was based on the recommendations of officers. We won’t turn down any application because of the element of competition, and this will improve a run-down area while creating new job opportunities.”

The plans by Doncaster woman Carol Dodds include a nail bar to the front of the building, with offices upstairs. Land to the rear that was owned by the council has been sold to create a courtyard cafe, accessed via a walkway from Hope Street.

Opening hours will be restricted to 8am to 8pm Monday to Sunday. A cafe-bar scheme was refused as unsuitable because of the closeness of the library.

Architect Ian Barraclough of Barraton Design Studio, Doncaster, said the terraced property and adjoining land had been vandalised heavily and would need a complete renovation including new floors and a roof.

There will be some new jobs created with the development, he added, although he understood the exact number is not yet determined.
