Three arrests made at demonstrations

THREE arrests were made during demonstrations between opposing supporters of the English Defence League (EDL) and United Against Fascism in Rotherham on Saturday.

About 300 EDL members took part in the protest, while 150 people held a counter-demonstration elsewhere in the town centre.

EDL members marched towards the Town Hall for a number of public speeches, while United Against Fascism supporters also walked to the Town Hall after congregating in All Saints Square.

Police arrested one man on suspicion of public order, including making threats towards a police officer, a second on suspicion of affray and a third on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon.

South Yorkshire Police said the day passed “without significant disruption.”
