Talented designers are all revved up

BUDDING fashion designers at Swinton School are in pole position in a national competition after motor racing team decided their creations were top gear.

Year nine youngsters from Swinton Community School are visiting Silverstone racing circuit after they were selected to go through to the final of the Silverstone Innovation Centre Design Challenge.

Pupils beat teams from around the country to design fashionware for staff of the motor racing giant and will take part in the finals of the Dragons Den-style competition.

Amongst the Judges in the 'Dragons Den' will be Pat Symonds, Executive Director of Engineering for Renault F1, and Nicky Grist – Rally Driver and co driver for Colin McCrae. The Challenge is also supported by, the East Midlands Development Agency and Aim higher South East.

Northamptonshire Enterprise are funding the Engineering Excellence Challenge. Nigel Mansell, former F1 Champion, who is also the President of the UK Youth Organisation is happy to support the Design Challenge.

Prizes on offer will be presented from a range of supporters including Porsche, BR Racing, Bletchley Park - Milton Keynes, Scalextric, Nicky Grist Motorsports Ltd, Sarah Franklin Racing, Prospect iP and F1 in Schools. The overall winning prize has been provided by Prodrive (Subaru World Rally Team) who will take the winning team on a tour of their premises in Banbury.

Darren Giles, one of the organiser of the Challenge has said "the competition is a fantastic way to incorporate real life issues and situations into the Design and Technology curriculum, giving it enhanced relevance as well as providing an exciting alternative to the normal design and make project."
