A COMPUTING and ICT tutor from Dearne Valley College has won a top enterprise award after helping her students set up their own business.

Glynis Duckenfield won the Enterprising Educator award as part of the IKIC Big Challenge competition which runs across schools, colleges and community groups in Barnsley.

It challenges young people aged 11-19 to develop their own business from an idea through to trading.

She said: “I was, and still am gobsmacked but immensely chuffed because this category is nominated by the learners; my trophy is proudly sat on my office desk.”

Glynis’ group of students nominated her for her help, advice and support when setting up an IT enterprise company which saw the Computing and ICT students go into business.

The Level 2 Computing students set-up DVCShareIT to offer a basic PC repair and upgrade service of desktop and laptop computers.

Glynis was presented with her award by Real Radio presenter ‘Dixie’ at the recent Barnsley Big Challenge Ceremony, which took place at the Barnsley Civic.

College students said in their final report: “Glynis basically organised everything from teaching us our units and finding help and support for our Enterprise.

“She spent a lot of time contacting people who could help and support us and managed to get funding to buy tools, components and everything we needed to get started.

“She ordered parts for us to build five new computers so we could have the experience of designing our own systems. She has helped us to believe that we can use our skills to start our own business when we leave college.”
