Store closure to cause job losses

A MEXBOROUGH supermarket is to close with the loss of 35 jobs.

The Co-operative Food Store in Orchard Street will shut on November 28, because of “poor trading performance”.

The company has pledged to make every effort to find alternative employment for workers affected.

No members of staff were available for comment at the store this week, but it is believed workers had hoped to keep their jobs until after Christmas.

The decision comes just months after a Lidl supermarket opened nearby and plans to build another supermarket near the train station were given the go-ahead. This is on top of a Tesco which already operates in the town centre.

Mexborough councillor Sue Phillips said there was a danger that Mexborough had too many supermarkets, but added new developments could not be ignored as they attract investment to the town.

She told the Times: “Any new developments have to be looked at carefully. It is possible that there may have been an oversaturation of supermarkets. There are only so many customers to go around.

“But new stores bring investment into the town and also increase footfall so they cannot be ignored.

“But for the Co-op I am sad to see it close. I used it myself and that is a lot of job losses. I just hope the company can find them other jobs.”

A spokesman for The Co-operative said staff had been informed of the decision to close which had been ‘taken with the greatest reluctance’.

“It is not, in any way, a reflection on the commitment and hard work of the store team. Every effort will be made to redeploy as many as possible of the 35 members of staff with The Co-operative, or to help them find alternative employment.”
