Staff’s unique trip to Uganda

STAFF from Mexborough School recently went on a trip of a lifetime to a school in Uganda as part of a unique exchange project.
Business manager Emma Rodgers and vocational teacher Phil Hallford spent a week at Air Force Secondary School earlier this month, which is on a former airbase in the region of Entebee.
They observed lessons in the school, enjoyed a trip to a safari park and met the local mayor.
The trip was organised through the British Council and staff from the Ugandan school are due to visit Mexborough next week as part of the exchange.
Gail Taylor, head of community and transition at Mexborough School, who helped to set up the visit, said: “Through the British Council you can choose which school you would like to be paired with and we wanted to work with one in the developing World.
“It is a poor region and their classes each have about 120 pupils so we sent them books and other classroom equipment.”
She added: “Staff from the school are doing a week long visit in Mexborough next week and we will be discussing how to move the partnership forward.
“One idea we have is to collect drink straws to send over which they can then turn into jewellery. We can then sell them over here and send back the profits so they can buy more classroom equipment.
“Hopefully we can extend the project over a few years, with visits going back and forward.”
