A South Yorkshire man has today been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to rape.
Mark Philip Unwin admitted one count of rape at a previous hearing at Sheffield Crown Court.
The 36-year-old, from Catcliffe, appeared at the same court today (July 4), where he was sentenced to five years in prison for the offence, which he committed on May 28 this year.
Pc Nicola Milner from South Yorkshire Police’s specialist rape investigation unit said: “As this case shows, South Yorkshire Police takes all reports of rape extremely seriously and will work tirelessly to bring offenders to justice.
“We have specially-trained officers in place who work with victims from the moment a rape is reported, gathering every piece of evidence in order to secure a conviction.
“I hope the fact that Unwin pleaded guilty brings some small shred of comfort to the victim in this case, as she was spared the further trauma of going through a Crown court trial.”
