Christmas has come early for South Yorkshire thieves after police found goods worth thousands of pounds left on display by dozy motorists.
The haul spotted in parked cars included 64 car stereos, 17 sat navs, six mobile phones, a flat-screen TV, games console, cash, handbags, computer tablets and wrapped Christmas gifts.
In the one-day operation, officers from South Yorkshire Police found 20 vehicles were unlocked or had been left unattended with their windows down – while one motorist even left a car boot wide open with items on display.
Detective Chief Inspector Chris Singleton, the force’s lead for vehicle crime, said: “I’d like to say I’m surprised by this, but I’m not.”
“I would urge the people of South Yorkshire to take basic security precautions by checking their car doors are locked, their windows and boots are shut and they are not leaving any valuables on display.
“You wouldn’t leave £100 in cash on your front seat, so why would you leave your sat nav out for all to see?”
