A South Yorkshire couple have been chosen as ambassadors for a national campaign after their family was hit twice by cancer.
Stuart and Jayne Ogley, of Monk Bretton, Barnsley, are Go The Distance Ambassadors for Cancer Research UK – a partner charity for the London Marathon.
Father-of-two Stuart, aged 34, lost his grandad to cancer in 2008, after his lungs became so damaged from smoking that doctors could not operate on him.
After gaining weight and putting his marriage to Jayne, aged 35, under strain, Stuart became inspired to lead a healthier life,
But mere weeks after that decision, his dad, aged 59, was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.
Fortunately his dad was treated successfully, but the episode spurred on Stuart’s health kick and soon his boys Andrew, aged 10, and Jack, aged six, joined his fitness efforts.
The couple will now run the London Marathon next year and are calling on more people across Yorkshire to get running for Cancer Research UK.
Stuart said: “Exercise brought us closer together as a family and the confidence I lost after my grandad’s death started to come back again.
“Getting fitter and raising money is a great way to invest in my own family family’s future as well as helping others.
“We can’t wait to take on the marathon and we are now calling on people across South Yorkshire to take on just one running challenge over the next 12 months, big or small.”
