lanterns released by friends and family to mark the first anniversary of a Doncaster schoolgirl’s death lit up the sky as part of moving tribute.

The mother of Amy Kirkby, who died suddenly last September when she collapsed in the shower, said she was overwhelmed by the show of support for her family.

Amy, 15, was about to start a new year at Ridgewood School when she was found unconscious in the bathroom of her home on Brompton Road, Sprotbrough.

Mum Joanne and Lucy, Amy’s 11-year-old sister, were joined by other family members and friends from the village and their schools for the lantern lighting event on the cricket pitch behind The Ivanhoe pub.

Mrs Kirkby said: “It was a beautiful occasion. It lit up the village and looked fantastic. It was so heartwarming that a year on people are still thinking about Amy and wanted to support us.”
