Plans to put the brakes on speeding drivers near a school in Mexborough have been welcomed this week.

A 20mph zone will be installed around Pitt Street Infants, and will include part of Pitt Street, most of Hirst Gate and the whole of Makin Street.

Plans were unveiled by Doncaster Council last year to reduce limits outside a number of schools around the borough – and now Doncaster North MP Ed Miliband has welcomed this latest announcement.

Mr Miliband, who represents Mexborough as part of his Doncaster North constituency, said: “I want pupils, parents and teachers to feel safe on the streets around their schools. I’m delighted to hear that permanent reduced speed limits are being introduced in this area of Mexborough.”

He added: “It’s proven that 20mph zones help reduce the number of accidents and I know the parents at Pitt Street Infants are very supportive of the plan.”

The move follows a campaign spearheaded by Don Valley MP Caroline Flint, and backed by Mr Miliband, Doncaster Central MP Rosie Winterton and Doncaster mayor Ros Jones.

Mexborough councillor David Holland also backed the plan.

He said: “Enforcing lower speed limits near schools is a sensible move. I believe parents, teachers and pupils will welcome this news.”

In a letter to Mr Miliband, planning officials said: “The council is undertaking a review of speed limits outside schools across the borough.

“This process determined that Pitt Street infants would benefit from a permanent reduction of the existing speed limit covering the accesses on Pitt Street and Hirst Gate. The proposed reduction will also include Makin Street.”

In September, Doncaster Council announced that roads outside nine schools would get a 20mph speed limit, and that similar safety measures would be rolled out across the borough in the future.

Mayor Jones pledged during her election campaign to make road safety changes during her term in office.
