South Yorkshire charity worker Tracy Haycox enjoyed a special trip to London – to receive a gong from the Queen.

The director of children and young people’s services at Rotherham charity Safe@Last visited Buckingham Palace for her investiture, having been made an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in June.

Mrs Haycox, who was honoured for her work with vulnerable young people, said: “It was a great honour to receive my MBE from the Queen.

“She was very gracious and expressed an interest in the work of Safe@Last, wishing us every success for the future.

The 51-year-old, of Brinsworth, Rotherham, travelled to London with her husband, lorry driver Richard, also 51, and two children, 21-year-old student Thomas and supermarket supervisor Jade, 25.

She said: ““I am honoured to have received this recognition, which is not only for my own work but is a reflection on my family and my colleagues also.

“I have a fantastic team behind me and am proud to work alongside such a dedicated group of people who give so much of themselves.

“I’m passionate about making a difference to young runaways who often find themselves, through no fault of their own, in difficult and dangerous situations. I’m humbled my contribution has been recognised.”

Safe@Last, which is based on Rotherham Road, Dinnington, Rotherham, works ‘with and on behalf of children and young people at risk through running away’.

Dan Dean, Safe@Last chairman of trustees, said: “Tracy’s dedication to the needs of the young people we work with is inspirational for all involved with Safe@Last.”
