Roadworks to cut M1 hold-ups in South Yorkshire

Work will get under way next week to widen the sliproads at a busy junction of the M1 in South Yorkshire.

The Highways Agency will start widening the junction 33 southbound exit slip road and roundabout at Catcliffe, between Rotherham and Sheffield, on Monday.

The aim is to cut congestion on the M1 at junction 33, reduce delays and prevent motorists from having to queue back along the M1 southbound carriageway.

The southbound exit slip road will be widened from two lanes to three and the northern side of the roundabout will be widened from three lanes to four.

The A630 Rotherway from the M1 southbound entry slip road will be widened from three lanes to four.

The £2 million scheme, due to be completed by April, also includes replacing traffic signs and signals, street lights, safety barriers, fencing and installing new high friction surfacing, with road markings, kerbing and drains.

Highways bosses said in order to minimise disruption to drivers, the majority of the work would take place between 8pm and 6am.

It means there will be overnight lane closures on the junction 33 southbound exit slip road and roundabout.

The M1 junction 33 southbound exit slip road may also be closed temporarily during the daytime and a diversion – via the M18 junction 1 – will be put in place.

Highways Agency service delivery team leader Roger Wantling said: “Once this work is completed, it will reduce congestion and delays around the junction.

“The work should also improve overall road safety and contribute to a reduction in accidents in the area.

“The scheme will make journey times more reliable and improve access to surrounding areas.

“During the work we advise drivers to check local traffic conditions and leave extra time for their journeys.”

The scheme is part of a £317m anti-bottleneck programme to reduce congestion and improve safety.
