Pupils celebrate

YOUNG clothes designers at Swinton School are to visit an international rally team after taking pole position in a national competition.

Year Nine youngsters from Swinton Community School are celebrating after winning the final of the Silverstone Innovation Centre Design Challenge.

The pupils beat teams from around the country to design fashionware for staff of the motor racing giant after taking part in the finals of the Dragons Den style competition. Prodrive (Subaru World Rally Team) will take the winning team on a tour of their premises in Banbury.

Naming themselves "Team Stig" in a nod to the enigmatic racing driver featured in TV's Top Gear programme, the team took the top step of the podium in the "Formula Fashion" category of the competition.

Team members were Nicholas Gammack, Jake Cheetham, Matthew Smith and Tom Badkin.

Jake Cheetham also won a "just for fun" challenge in a Formula One simulator.

Darren Giles, one of the organiser of the challenge, said: "The competition is a fantastic way to incorporate real life issues and situations into the Design and Technology curriculum, giving it enhanced relevance as well as providing an exciting alternative to the normal design and make project. The support that we have received has enabled us to offer some fantastic prizes. We also have a team of experts who can offer support and advise on the route to taking the winning design to market."
