Cash prizes are up for grabs for those residents who light up the Isle this Christmas.

Belton Parish Council is offering the monetary incentive for homeowners who adorn their properties with the best festive display of lights.

Residents in Belton, Beltoft and Sandtoft are encouraged to take part in the annual event as soon as possible as judges tour the parish in the run up to the season of goodwill.

Parish council chairman Ezra Price told the Bells/Advertiser: “Unlike most Isle of Axholme villages Belton doesn’t have a central point.

“The busy A161 runs the length of the High Street and it is considered that decorative lights along the highway would be a distraction to road users.”

However, he added, he hoped that individuals would take the time to brighten up the village by erecting decorations outside their properties instead.

“I hope as many people as possible will help brighten up Belton over the Christmas period,” he continued.

“The competition is always popular, and although we can only offer prizes to people for decorating homes, I hope as many retailers and businesses will enter to the festive spirit too.”

Winners will receive their prizes at Belton Parish Council’s meeting on Tuesday January 21.

For more details on the competition contact Gilly Greensit on 0114 2211452.
