AREAS around Mexborough are still sealed off and under police guard, two days after the discovery of a body.

A 44-year old man has been questioned about the death of a 48-year old man who was found at 1.45pm on Sunday, at a property on Auckland Road.

The dead man’s identity has still not been released, although a post-mortem examination was expected to take place yesterday.

The police presence around Mexborough continues to be high, as officers attempt to piece together the sequence of events that led to the man, named locally only as Chris, losing his life.

People from the neighbourhood said they understood an argument had flared up between two men on Saturday evening and then carried on through the night.

But locals were surprised and shocked to hear of a death on Sunday, when police officers made door to door enquiries.

One resident of Princess Road said: “No-one seems to know much. The police were trying to find CCTV coverage. I’ve got a camera in a box waiting to be installed. This area used to be quiet but has got a lot more rough now. You see drug dealing going on..”

He added: “We don’t usually see any police but since Sunday it’s been swarming with them.”

A newsagency that was part of an area cordoned off on Adwick Road was forced to sell papers around the corner as the shop remained closed yesterday. Today, however, the tape was removed and business went on as usual.
