Police cadets reassure Doncaster shoppers

Police cadets have been out and about getting involved in giving crime prevention advice to shoppers around Doncaster.

Five cadets, all aged 17, were at the Asda supermarket on Gliwice Way, Bawtry Road, to meet and greet customers and hand out leaflets on preventing car crime.

Police cadets is a voluntary scheme for young local people who want to make a difference to their area and discover more about policing and working in the community.

They learn about aspects such as citizenship, personal development and personal safety, police powers, road safety, drugs law and about theft and criminal damage.

Acting Sergeant Michelle Hudson-Watts said: “As one of the cadet leaders for Doncaster, I like to get the youngsters involved in as many operations as possible, so they get a realistic insight into some of the issues that police tackle.

“It’s great to see their social skills and confidence improve as they interact with the community. They are all enthusiastic and eager to learn, which is great to see.”

The cadets have also visited Morrisons supermarket on York Road, where they talked with members of the public and filled out community surveys. They also patrolled the car park to identify vehicles that were vulnerable to crime, notified the drivers and gave advice on how to keep their cars secure.

Another two-hour session around the Frenchgate and markets area revealed at least 60 out of 500 vehicles were vulnerable to crime. This was due satellite navigation holders being left on windscreens and handbags left in the foot wells.

Acting Chf Supt Eddie Murphy said: “The cadets really add value to policing in Doncaster. They will always put themselves forward to carry out activities, which improve our communities.

“It’s excellent to see them out and about helping local residents and supporting South Yorkshire Police in crime prevention initiatives.”
