A gas main explosion continues to cause road traffic chaos in Scunthorpe.

Fire crews rescued an injured person at the incident on Ashby Road in Scunthorpe, that occurred late this morning.

Subsequent road closures involve Rowland Road, Lloyds Avenue, the junction of Ashby Road and West Common Lane, the junction of Cottage Beck Road and Queensway.

It is believed work was being carried out on a gas main when a fractured pipe caused the blast, creating a gas cloud, said a Humberside fire and rescue spokesman.

National Gas Network has an engineer on scene who is isolating the gas supply and evacuations have included both residential and commercial properties.

Police are managing the traffic around an exclusion zone that was set up for the safety of the public.
