The Rifles Regiment have requested the opportunity to exercise their right to the Freedom of Entry for Doncaster to honour those who have recently returned from a Tour of Duty in Afghanistan and the memory of their fallen colleagues who sadly did not return.

On Saturday September 8, 2012, soldiers from 5 Rifles and the 5th Regiment Royal Fusiliers, former Officers, veterans and Cadets will be parading through the town centre and arriving at the Mansion House for 11.10am.

Major Justin Maciejewski representing The Rifles hopes that the people of Doncaster will welcome the Regiment home. Sadly Private Tom Lake (PWRR) and Rifleman Sheldon Steel (Rifles) were lost during the Tour and the soldiers will remember their bravery and ultimate sacrifice.

The Parade will pass through Wood Street, Cleveland Street, Duke Street, St Sepulchre Gate and halt at the Mansion House.

Mayor of Doncaster Peter Davies said: “I hope that many people will join me and the Civic Mayor in showing support for The Rifles.

”The bravery of this regiment, like that of all our servicemen and women past and present, cannot be underestimated.”

Civic Mayor, Councillor Christine Mills added: ”I encourage everyone to turn out to welcome back The Rifles.

“This freedom of entry parade is also an opportunity to acknowledge the sacrifices made by the regiment during their recent tour of duty. “

Following the Freedom of Entry parade, a legion of Roman soldiers will also march through the streets of Doncaster’s town centre as part of the St Leger Festival Week’s Romans weekend and the action packed day is set to finish with live music in the Markets as Doncaster Live 2012 kicks off at 6pm.
