Isle patients are to be quizzed online about their stay in Scunthorpe Hospital, as part of an NHS Trust bid to improve and win users’ confidence.
The friends and family test is now online, for all patients who are treated at hospitals run by the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which is currently in ‘special measures’, to fill in afterwards.
The test came in as a national project earlier this year. Within 48 hours of receiving care or treatment as an inpatient or visitor to A and E, patients are asked: ‘How likely are you to recommend our ward/A and E department to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?’
A six-point scale is attached. and patients can give more feedback on their answers if this is appropriate.
The results from tests are designed to help patients evaluate their local hospitals and so that they can be involved in decisions about their care.
Quality matron Diane Hughes is a co-ordinator for the project. She said: “We want to use the scores as well as the comments patients have given us as part of the friends and family test, to build on good performance and identify areas for improvement.
“The return rates have been quite small at the moment so we want to encourage more patients to give their feedback to let us know what they think of the service they’ve received.”
The friends and family test is not seen as any kind of replacement for the Trust’s existing complaints or compliments procedure, and all other feedback systems are still being used alongside it, with national patient surveys and inspections.
