Old maps show the Dearne of days gone by
A COLLECTION of maps showing the layout of the Dearne from more than 50 years ago has been donated to Mexborough and District Heritage Society.
Ordnance survey maps from 1958 were donated by Nottinghamshire based chartered surveyor David Bingham.
They capture a time when the Manvers coking plant was the biggest in Europe, and a view of Mexborough before the dual carriageway was built.
The society said on their website: “It’s like looking at a 50s version of Google maps.
“While we have photographs of specific areas, this is the first time we have had such a wide-ranging overview of how the town looked just over a decade after the war.”
The maps can be seen by visiting www.mexboroughheritage.co.uk.
