AN AIRLINE is to increase the number of flights from Robin Hood Airport as a result of the planned multi-million pound link road.

The new road direct from junction three of the M18 to the airport is expected to bring more passengers to the region with more than 215,000 expected to fly with Thomson and First Choice in 2013/2014.

The Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme (FARRS) was given the green light by council planners last month and construction is expected to begin in early 2014.

Operators Thomson and First Choice have vowed to increase their capacity with additional flights to the popular destinations of Palma, Dalaman and Reus.

Airport director Steve Gill said: “We are delighted to announce that Thomson and First Choice have added to their capacity from Doncaster Sheffield airport. The organisation has flown over 3.8 million passengers from South Yorkshire during the seven years they have been with us.

“We expected the new road to bring additional benefits to the South Yorkshire passenger and with over 150,000 Thomson and First Choice holidays on offer from DSA in summer 2013 we are pleased that we remain Yorkshire’s largest operation for the company.

Paul Cooper, from Thomson and First Choice said: “The news that the FARRRS link road has taken a step forward is something we have been waiting to hear for DSA.

“We are confident that this new road will open up key markets in Sheffield for us and help to attract passengers from the city.

“Our relationship with DSA means that we work closely with the team to develop our offering for Yorkshire passengers.”

The new link road is expected to reduce journey times for airport passengers and cargo operators from Sheffield by up to 20 minutes.
