New fleet of gritters for the Isle as winter approaches

Council gritters gear up for winter.

A FLEET of new gritters has taken to the roads in preparation for frosty winter weather.

North Lincolnshire Council has stocked up on 6,000 tonnes of salt and bought three new gritters and knapsack sprayers to treat difficult to reach areas.

The gritters have carried out their first official runs this week after weeks of practice routes and will be on call day and night through to the end of March.

In preparation the council has been working with town and parish councils to build a network of snow wardens, ensuring each community has a full supply of salt and, in certain at risk areas, extra salt bins.

Cllr Nigel Sherwood, cabinet member for Highways and Neighbourhood at North Lincolnshire Council, said: “The winter service team is fully prepared for the return of the winter weather.

“We have been putting everything in place during the summer, so that we are as ready as we can be for the winter.”
